Bone and Veggie Scraps Broth

Waste not Want not!

Earth Blessings everyone!

We have a saying in our house; "use the whole buffalo"! Meaning, use every part of something that you can.

Trying to be zero waste is tough, but there are small things that you can do to curve waste production.

Bone Broth is a densely nutritious broth made from animal bones. Usually chicken, turkey or beef. As the bones simmer for multiple hours ( I generally leave it on for a full 24 hours) they release an array of powerful nutrients. Dense in calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus, this bone broth makes an excellent food as medicine recipe.

To Make:

About every two weeks or so, I make a whole chicken in our slow cooker. I de-bone it and throw all the bones back in the slow cooker.

I also add all the veggie scraps from that two week span. This could be carrot ends and shavings, onion ends, celery and broccoli ends. Pretty much anything we've eaten fresh that week.

I then fill the slow cooker with water and leave it on low til dinner time the next day. It makes the whole house smell amazing! I usually make a soup with it. The kids love it and it's an easy super nutritious dinner that I don't have to feel guilty about!

When all said and done, this entire broth is made from what would be garbage!! When your ready to strain everything out, just throw whatever is left in the compost!

I rarely add spice to this broth, it's delicious and generally never needs it, it's all preference!

So easy, so good!!

Let me know how your broth turns out!!!
